Exer-3/6, currently in its 3rd generation, is a general purpose three (rats) or six (mice) lane animal exerciser utilizing single belt construction with dividing walls suspended over the tread surface. Exer-3/6 can be supplied with or without a stimulus assembly. An electrical stimulus system option is composed of three or six shock grids, each with individual on/off switches. Stimulus intensity is adjustable and LED lamps indicate which stimulus grid is active. Design of electrical stimulus grid reflects special attention to avoid injuries to animals. Animals are exercised in three or six compartments made of durable plastic (clear Lexan or opaque PVC). For some applications, users may choose to purchase Exer-3/6 with a single large compartment. An included drive motor controller provides smooth and continuous adjustment of speed in the range 3-100 m/m. The exercising belt is made with special material that facilitates the animals' grip and is easy to clean.

Disposable Cage Mouse Running Wheel
The Columbus Instruments Mouse Disposable Cage Running Wheel measures spontaneous activity in a voluntary free-spinning running wheel. The wheel is constructed to fit universally into most typical disposable cages (cage is not included with the system). Each wheel has a magnetic indicator and a hall effect sensor that connects to a computer interface and records wheel revolutions at user-specified intervals. Windows software is included for installation on a customer supplied PC. Data can be viewed in real time and exported into a CSV format at the end of the experiment.
The wheel is designed to fit universally into most disposable cages provided that it has an interior ceiling
height of 5.25 inches (14 cm). It attached to the side of the cage by a magnetic clamping mechanism. The Wheel Counter Interface has inputs for 8 wheel sensors and multiple counters can be daisy chained together to provide a maximum of 128 wheel inputs.

Gait Analysis Treadmil: Exer Gait
Exer Gait is an open treadmill in which a clear belt measuring (51 mm) in width that provides the running surface for a single mouse. Suspended over the surface of the belt is one clear wall (as viewed from the front of the device) that creates a running lane width of 1.5 (38 mm). The running lane length available for animal access is adjustable from 4.5 (11.4 cm) to 10.5 26.6 cm). The running lane provides 1.75 (44 mm) of inside height.
New Exer Gait XL for rats is now available. Running lane is 3.5" (9 cm) wide and 8.75" (22 cm) long. The width can be adjusted to 2" (5 cm) for mice.
The incline of Exer Gait is fixed at horizontal but can be externally tilted for either uphill or downhill running. Tread speed is adjustable over the range of 0 to 50 centimeters per second with a resolution of 0.1 centimeter per second.

Metabolic Modular Treadmil
Columbus Instruments' Modular Treadmill encloses each animal within an isolated space. An exercise belt, associated pulleys and optional stimuli are enclosed in a compartment which can be made air-tight. The addition of an open-flow calorimeter to the compartment will create a complete system for the measurement of respiratory metabolic performance while exercising. A Modular Treadmill system is constructed of master and slave units. A master unit incorporates an electric motor and speed controller to which one to seven additional slave units can be connected for exercising multiple animals. The incline of each animal compartment is individually adjustable in 5o increments. Electrical stimulus grids are available for each exercise lane and can be activated manually by the operator. Intensity of electrical shock is also operator adjustable from 0.35mA to 1.5mA. LED lamps indicate which electrical stimulus grid is active.

Grip Strength Meter
Columbus Instruments' line of Grip Strength Meters are employed in assessing neuromuscular function by sensing the peak amount of force an animal applies in grasping specially designed pull bar assemblies. Metering is performed with precision force gauges in such a manner as to retain the peak force applied on a digital display. The values may be either recorded manually or automatically with the included software. Fore and hind limb assessments can be performed concurrently with the dual sensor models or they can be performed in separate trials with the single stand model. Readings may be obtained in pounds, kilograms, or newtons. All values are accurate to within +/- 0.25% of full scale capacity. Force gauges are offered in 0-1Kg and 0-5Kg ranges. Pull bar assemblies are manufactured to suit the species of animal under test. Standard pull bar assemblies are offered for rats and mice.
