Gas Analyzer

Columbus Instruments' Model 180C Gas Analyzer is a modular system that allows for multiple gas and/or multiple sample configurations. Model 180C Gas Analyzer can be configured to monitor O2, CO2, CO, CH4, H2S and H2 (other gases are being added on a regular basis; consult Columbus Instruments with your particular requirements). In addition, up to 80 sample sites may be selected for periodic analysis. The combination of multiple gases and automated sample site selection make Model 180C a versatile gas analyzer for many scientific, commercial and industrial applications.
Various sensor types and ranges are available for incorporation within the Model 180C Gas Analyzer system. Oxygen sensing may be accomplished either electrochemically (5-25%) or paramagnetically (0-100%). Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane and other hydrocarbons are monitored with single beam non-dispersive technology over ranges 0-20% (please note: sensing ranges are gas specific; consult Columbus Instruments for details). Hydrogen sulphide is sensed electrochemically over the range 0-200ppm. Hydrogen is sensed over the range 0-2000 or 0-10,000 ppm.

Portable Gas Meter

Our new Portable Gas Meter is an inexpensive, battery-operated gas analyzer. Its size (3" x 8" x 11") makes it easily portable.
The Portable Gas Meter can simultaneously measure O2, CO2, and CH4 gases evolving from compost or landfill and can measure concentrations of O2, CO2, and CH4 in the range of 0 to 100%; other ranges are available as an option. The Portable Gas Meter is equipped with its own air sampling pump and utilizes an infrared gas analyzer for measuring CO2 and an electrochemical fuel cell for O2 measurements. The life span of the O2 sensor cell is 5 years, while the CO2 sensor will work indefinitely. The gas analyzer's response time is approximately 30 seconds.

Gas Mixer: Pegas 4000

Columbus Instruments' PEGAS 4000MF Gas Mixer is a multi-gas mixer, which can blend from 2 to 4 gasses in a precise mixture available upon demand. The PEGAS 4000MF uses thermal mass flow controllers to provide an exact flow of each component gas. The system is equipped with an internal microprocessor to perform all of the needed calculations and to provide signals to the flow controllers. The user only needs to enter the total flow and the concentration of each component gas. Front panel rotometer shows flow of mixed gas. External input for contact closure control to shut off gas flow. Options available: Remote control by a PC via RS-232 serial connections and user-programmed overpressure shut off.

Condensing Air Dryer

Removal of water vapour from gaseous samples prior to measurement is important to assure accuracy. The Columbus Instruments Condensing Air Dryer reduces the vapour content of gas samples to a 1°C dew point. The system has the added advantage of allowing the recovered water to be returned to the point of origin. This is especially important when it is desirable to maintain the moisture content of a sampled environment or when the water contains elements that are important to the process from which the sample has been drawn. Such cases exist in the measurement of soil, sewage and other aqueous solutions.

While chemical removal of water vapour is tolerable in some applications, its use can be costly and disposal difficult. The Columbus Instruments Condensing Air Dryer reduces the demand for chemicals by reducing water vapour pressure to levels that minimize chemical use. In a typical application, the Condensing Air Dryer precedes a chemical absorber in the air sample path. The liquid resulting from the Condensing Air Dryer may be returned to the process from which the sample was drawn. The pre-dried™ sample may then be presented to a chemical agent for removal of any residual water required to achieve the desired vapour pressure.

Compost Respirometer: Oxymax C

Oxymax-C is a special adaptation of the Columbus Instruments Oxymax Deluxe System with features specific to compost research. The instrument incorporates specially designed air-flow and temperature controllers that provide a composting environment that is under very precise control. Oxymax-C automatically regulates air-flow as a means of controlling temperature of the composting process.
An Oxymax-C system comprises an isothermal composting reactor designed to accelerate the decay process by optimization of temperature and air flow. Temperature control is implemented by two control mechanisms: air circulation and an insulating water jacket. A temperature probe, placed in the composting mass, serves as feedback to the air flow controller.

Economical Respirometer: Oxymax-ER

Our new inexpensive single or dual gas (O2 / CO2) respirometer, the Oxymax ER, is a table top model which can be powered from a 115/220V power line or from a car battery (utilizing a voltage converter). Total power consumption is 50W. The ER-10s dimensions (14D x 11.5 W x 7.5H or 36 cm x 29 cm x 19 cm) and weight (20 pounds or 9 kg) make it convenient to use both in lab and field situations for soil, compost, sludge or wastewater respiration measurements. The Oxymax ER can simultaneously measure 1 to 10 liquid or solid samples, from 50 ml to 10 liter in volume. The patented principle of measurement, which involves air sampling from the head space of the sample chamber, circulating it through the gas analyzer and returning back to the sample chamber without any contact with the sample, assures that the gas analyzer cannot be easily contaminated. The calibration of O2 gas analyzer is done automatically and periodically with ambient air, removing the need for expensive, precisely-mixed gas bottles while respirometers equipped with the CO2 analyzer only need to be calibrated once a year. Results of measurements are presented in mg O2/hour or as an accumulated (total in mg) value of oxygen consumed from the beginning of the experiment. Samples are continuously aerated with adjustable air flow (100 ml/min. to 1,500 ml/min.) except for the short time interval when a particular sample is being measured by the gas analyzer. For solid samples (moist soil or compost) which are prone to water loss, an optional condensing air dryer is available. Water vapour is returned to each chamber as water droplets, restoring the samples moisture content.

Respirometer: Micro Oxymax

The Columbus Instruments Micro-Oxymax system is a highly adaptable general purpose closed circuit respirometer. The system monitors the concentration of gas contained within an enclosed head space into which the material being monitored is respiring. Periodic sensing of the gas concentration, along with an equally accurate measurement of the volume of the head space, allows calculations of incremental and accumulated values for consumption and production. The Micro-Oxymax patented design principle provides a sensing threshold near 2 x 10-7 liter per hour.
The system can be configured for single or multiple gas sensing. Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen Sulphide and Hydrogen can be sensed over specially selected ranges to meet almost any application. The Micro-Oxymax can be configured to monitor from one to 80 chambers.
